It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

That's right, I made it. I made it through 7 years of staying home with children to this momentous moment...when my two children went off to a full day of school TOGETHER.

Here goes...

I tried to get a picture of the kids walking down the driveway with Mike, but they were too excited to see the recycling guys dump our recyclables.  Ahhh memories.

Yes. Julie chose to wear fake glasses and Superman thigh-highs for the first day of school. At the end of her preschool year last June, Julie won the fashionista award for her class...nuff said about this girl's fashion sense and over what this mama is willing to battle.

When all the shoutin' and fightin' is over, these two truly love each other.

What for it, wait for it...here comes bus 831!

We were delighted to find Miss Betty at the wheel again this year. Both kids are very fond of Miss Betty. We saw her at the firehouse breakfast last spring (yuuuum, bacon Uncle Paul) and she surprised me with her height. When you only see someone sitting down for 180 days a year, it's amazing what they look like standing on legs.

Mike took this day off of work. We celebrated the idea of free childcare by going out to the local Citgo for breakfast (yummmmmm sausage gravy) and lazing about the house. I can see this being a yearly tradition.

Now.

Julie came home from school full of bubbles and stories of who was in her class, where she ate lunch and who she sat with on the bus. She also came home with many requests...

Mommy, can we go swimming?
No. We don't swim after school.
Mommy, can we go for ice cream?
No. We don't go for ice cream after school.
Mommy, can Maria come over and play?
No, we don't have friends over after school.

Stomping of feet, gnashing of teeth, squinchy V between her eyebrows...

MoMMYYYYY! You mean to tell me I can't do NUFFIN after school? Dats it den, I'm NOT going to school tomorrow, I have dings I need to DO.

Wowza. Wowza for this mama. After my child's first and only full day of public education, she declared that she didn't have enough time to do the things she wants to do. Over the next 13 years, this child has 2,339 more days of school until she is free and clear to do what she wants. I guess we will just take it one day at a time.
